How to Run a Successful
Credit Repair Business – Warm Market

For years I’ve been blogging about “How to Start a Credit Repair Business.” I’ve discussed all aspects of getting a credit repair business set up, from federal and state laws to websites. If you are still researching that phase, then look through my Credit Repair Blog and YouTube channel for that sort of information. However, it’s time to start sharing aspects of how to run a successful credit repair business once it’s started.

These blog posts and YouTube videos will break down best practices to get a credit repair business off to a good start. As well, I’ll discuss communication tools, internet and phone apps, software, marketing techniques and much more. If you follow and read these blog posts, and/or watch the corresponding videos, you’ll learn exactly how I’ve developed a very successful credit repair business. In addition, you’ll discover how I do it from a home office and earn six figures a year doing so.

I’m going to address marketing first for 2 reasons. First, that’s what most people are concerned with and want to know about. Second, as I cover what I have done to market my business I’ll discuss the tools and technology I use to do so. So, let’s start where you should start, your warm market.

Start with Your Warm Market

I know. I get it. You most likely tensed up or even grunted when you read that last sentence. It seems that most people don’t want to let the people that they know, know they just started a new business. That’s just not logical. Further, it shows signs of insecurity about oneself or a lack of confidence in the business they’re starting.  Here’s the reality. If you don’t feel that the people closet to you, or even acquaintances, should know about your new credit repair business, the you shouldn’t start it.

On the other hand, if you’re excited about letting everyone know you’re available to help people improve their credit situation you already have a leg up on the competition. Now we just need to figure out the best way to do it. Do you do an email blast? Should you text everyone? Should you call key people? Let’s explore some possibilities.

The key is your attitude and how you’re thinking about it. You are starting a new business. And you want to learn how to run a successful credit repair business. Think of it as any new business. What if you were starting a new tax business? How about if you just got your real estate license? Or you were opening a new boutique. What if you bought a Sports Clips franchise? What would you do then? How would you get the word out to everyone that you know about your new business?

If I Did It All Over Again

Here’s something I would do if I were doing it all over again. In fact, this is something you could do a couple of times a year. Host a gathering at your home or a local restaurant. Get some finger foods and serve beverages. Wine and beer if you’re so inclined. If you’re not opposed to alcohol, I think it’s a good idea for the simple reason that a drink or two loosens people up.

Have flyers and brochures available and invite people from all aspects of your life. Some family members that are supportive and don’t think you’ve lost it because you’re not working for someone else. Call anyone you know in real estate, the mortgage business or banking. Invite other entrepreneurs you know in any business. Make it a good opportunity for people to get to know other people. Prepare to speak to the crowd that gathers for 5 minutes max about your new business and let the party flow.

If you’re more of a business or formal mindset you could host a presentation of your new business. You could do a PowerPoint presentation of your services and educate people on the importance of good credit. And you can close with how they can help you grow your business which is referrals. If they need help with their credit, they’ll tell you. Trust me. You don’t need to ask.

Just Get the Word Out

If you don’t want to go through the effort to do something like hosting a gathering, then you still need to contact people that you know. In our business we have developed phone apps for that purpose. All your contacts are automatically transferred to the app. Then you can send a contact a message letting them know about your business. If they express any interest in learning more, you can send them a link to a 2-minute teaser video.

By the way I would NOT do an email blast. That’s very impersonal, very old school, and most importantly ineffective.

Another bit of advice that might seem like common sense is do not approach people that you know as credit repair candidates. Again, if they need help let them approach you after they know about your business. Approach them by asking them to help you get the word out about your business. The people that you know, know a ton of people. You can expand your sphere of influence very rapidly by engaging your contacts.

If you embrace the idea of contacting your warm market this can not only get your business off to a great start, but it can keep you busy for a long time. And, for the most part, it’s free (except the appetizers and drinks part).

Incorporate the Efforts of Others to Run Your Credit Repair Business

Another unique aspect to our business model is that you can bring on others that also want to start a new business. Why not join you in the credit repair business? You could be full time while they just want to earn a little side hustle money. Or visa versa. Either way you earn a percentage of what they produce. By getting the word out to people that you know you could expand your business immediately. You’ll have people referring people to you. And, you might have some people that join you in the business and have a huge incentive to duplicate your efforts. That means they’ll be telling a lot of people about it too!

The Perfect Business

When looking for a home-based business opportunity it makes sense to look for a company that has already built a strong business infrastructure. Then an individual can plug into that infrastructure to have everything they need to run a successful business from the start. That includes all kinds of tools and systems from marketing to merchant services to adherence to federal and state laws. In this case I’m going to discuss an opportunity that combines the large and ever-expanding market of credit repair and network marketing.

Yes, Network Marketing!

If you just rolled your eyes or had the hair on the back of your neck stand up, read on for a bit. Let me address a common criticism about the network marketing industry. The Opportunity

I have been part of a company since 2012 that has a very strong credit repair service with an A+ BBB rating. They have also addressed specific challenges within the credit repair industry such as federal and state laws. And, they have a well-trained staff that does all the credit repair service delivery for the distributors (we call them Agents) in the field. And, the market of people that need a 2nd income that doesn’t take up a lot of their time. Most people know others that have challenges with their credit. And/or they know people in real estate or the mortgage business they could help by turning their credit challenged clients into qualified buyers.

This company is a credit repair company first and a network marketing company second. If you have experience in the network marketing industry, you’ll appreciate the difference. Most companies in the network marketing industry could plug in any product to their program. As with any business, prospecting for customers is critical to its success. It requires networking, developing referrals, or advertising. Perhaps all 3. They surely were alone in achieving their success, weren’t they? In sports you perform as an individual even if part of a team. Yet in virtually every Hall of Fame speech the athlete runs out of time giving thanks and credit to dozens of people that impacted their career. And without whom they wouldn’t be standing at that podium on that day.

For several years I have been blogging and producing videos about how to, and what you need to start a credit repair business. If done correctly the credit repair business can be an incredibly lucrative and rewarding home-based business. However, it’s all about the business model. If someone chooses the wrong business model it can be a failure before it gets off the ground.

The reason I am qualified to share this information is that I started my own credit repair business in 2012. Today that business produces nearly $1 million in annual revenue and provides me a very comfortable 6 figure income. I have worked from home the entire time and control my schedule. My wife and I travel whenever we like. I can decide to work while traveling or have someone on the team work my business for me and shut down completely.

The revenue, income and time freedom I enjoy are all a result of the business model we chose. I cannot stress this enough. You can choose to go it alone and start a credit repair business all on your own. I contend that if you choose this type of business model you will never generate the revenue, income and time freedom you perhaps desire.

  • The cost of starting a credit repair business can be high
    • A requirement to start a credit repair business in North Carolina is to obtain a surety bond. The bond must be in the amount of $10,000. The cost of the bond will be dependent on your credit score and other factors. The lowest cost for a surety bond that I could find was $200 annually with excellent credit.
    • To be in business today you must have a website. You can hire someone to build it for you or build it yourself. Costs will vary. Even if you have the skill to build it yourself using Wix, WordPress or another service, there are other costs. You must pay for hosting, an SSL certificate, a related email address, and more
    • You will need to purchase software. The cost of credit repair software ranges from $30/month to $400/month.
    • Marketing materials are a must to be in the credit repair business. You could start off with just business cards and flyers. But in order to compete with other companies you will want to have tri-fold brochures and even marketing videos. This can get very costly
    • Providing your clients online access to their credit repair information and updates to the progress may be cost prohibitive when you’re starting out. But just know that other companies provide this and it’s something you’ll have to convince your prospects that they don’t need

Even if you have the capital to start a credit repair business in North Carolina
have you considered the following:

  • Working alone in your credit repair business will limit the amount of business you can do. Many under estimate the time to work on a client’s credit repair. They also don’t consider the amount of time for marketing to new prospects and selling to those prospects
  • Initially you may not have other services available to increase a client’s credit score. Removing negative items from a credit report only accounts for 35% of a credit score. Can you provide other services to impact the other 65%?
  • When you start your business you have no reputation, credibility or trust built up in the market. Many times consumers look for a Better Business Bureau rating or reviews to help them make a decision. You will want to create listings on Yelp, Google, and other services. You will also need to have social media pages/accounts on Facebook and other platforms. If no one can look you up on the internet they will not trust your business
  • There is a lot of competition in North Carolina in this industry. All the large players are in the state and can offer more services and more technology
  • You will have to have competitive pricing. And, if you are not an attorney, bank or non-profit organization you cannot charge fees for service until they are performed. You can charge a nominal start-up fee

I’m going to introduce you to a business model that combines a home-based credit repair business opportunity with an MLM pay structure. It’s a brilliant business model for those that want a part-time or even full time home based business. When the company started in 2004 they had more of a traditional business model. They had independent sales people that earned straight commissions and could not build a team. About 10 years ago they switched to a credit repair MLM model. Since then they have exploded in growth.

If your reading this then one could assume that you look favorably on MLM or network marketing opportunities. For those that do not it may be because they perceive there to be a high failure rate among those that try MLM businesses. Let’s explore that for a bit.

MLM or Network Marketing vs. Traditional Small Business

According to Forbes.com 20% of traditional small business start ups fail in the first year. And, 50% fail in 5 years. Compare that with research on people that start an MLM business. 50% fail in their 1st year and 90% fail over 5 years. So, the failure rate is higher in a typical MLM opportunity than a traditional small business.

Most would look at the statistics just mentioned and stay away from MLM because 90% fail in 5 years. Others would look at the stats and jump in because they see that 10% succeed! What people don’t realize is that the 90/10 rule applies to most opportunities that aren’t a W-2 job where you get a salary. In opportunities where people must generate their income, 90% will fail. But that does not scare away those of use that believe enough in ourselves to become one of the 10%.

The primary reason why the failure rate is higher in MLM is because that the upfront investment is so low. There’s less ‘skin in the game’. This makes it much easier to walk away instead of fighting to make it work. Because of the low start up cost people don’t research the business before they start. People don’t treat it like a business. For some reason people that start a network marketing business treat it with less care than if they had made a bigger investment or commitment.

A Credit Repair MLM – Smaller Investment, Lower Risk

A credit repair MLM is a brilliant business model because it reduces the high cost of starting a credit repair business. Therefore it also reduces the risk. In addition, there is a huge market of consumers in need of credit repair. Beyond that there is a growing number of people looking for a second income.

Consider These Facts about the Market for a Credit Repair MLM

Approximately 35% of the U.S. adult population have a credit score below 620. This is considered sub-prime and will not get most qualified for a mortgage. That means that about 86 million people in this country at some point are going to need help with their credit.

44 million people in the U.S. have a second income or side hustle. It’s becoming more apparent that many Americans are having a difficult time meeting monthly expenses on one income alone.

Given these numbers there is a big opportunity to provide helpful services and to build a large team of people offering the services.

Why a Credit Repair MLM is Inherently Different Than a Typical MLM

Because credit repair is a financial service people perceive a person offering credit repair to be more like a traditional business person. The customer doesn’t need to be explained how an MLM works because they are not participating in the business at all. They are simply a customer of the service. It’s not that anyone is hiding anything it’s just that the business model is irrelevant to the customer. And, the business model has no bearing on the quality and performance of the service. In fact, because the main company provides the service and not the person in the field, the quality of the service is higher and more consistent.

Finding customers is a relatively simply process. You can and should let people that you know you’re in the credit repair business. They may need your service or know someone that does. Or, they may be looking for a second income. But the best place to find customers is to talk with those that see people with low credit scores daily. People that work in real estate, mortgage, automobile, solar and banking are great people to talk with. They benefit greatly be referring their credit challenged prospects to you. And again, there’s no need to explain the business model. You’re not trying to get people into the business. You’re just trying to help their credit challenged prospective clients.

And, yes there are millions in this country looking for that second income stream. Most desire to earn between $500 and $1,000 a month. They are not necessarily wanting to earn six figures. That means that if they simply find a few customers every month they will achieve their income goal and stay with the business long term. They may even decide to invest more time and effort into it. For those that want to earn significantly more, simply go find a lot of customers and people that want to earn $500 a month.

People don’t have to recruit. If they just want to earn that $500 to $1,000 a month they can do that from selling the services alone. They do not have to recruit anyone into their business. But note that if someone wants to earn a significant income or turn it into a full-time career, building a team is essential.
