Credit Repair Business – Warm Market

For years I’ve been blogging about “How to Start a Credit Repair Business.” I’ve discussed all aspects of getting a credit repair business set up, from federal and state laws to websites. If you are still researching that phase, then look through my Credit Repair Blog and YouTube channel for that sort of information. However, it’s time to start sharing aspects of how to run a successful credit repair business once it’s started.

These blog posts and YouTube videos will break down best practices to get a credit repair business off to a good start. As well, I’ll discuss communication tools, internet and phone apps, software, marketing techniques and much more. If you follow and read these blog posts, and/or watch the corresponding videos, you’ll learn exactly how I’ve developed a very successful credit repair business. In addition, you’ll discover how I do it from a home office and earn six figures a year doing so.

I’m going to address marketing first for 2 reasons. First, that’s what most people are concerned with and want to know about. Second, as I cover what I have done to market my business I’ll discuss the tools and technology I use to do so. So, let’s start where you should start, your warm market.

Start with Your Warm Market

I know. I get it. You most likely tensed up or even grunted when you read that last sentence. It seems that most people don’t want to let the people that they know, know they just started a new business. That’s just not logical. Further, it shows signs of insecurity about oneself or a lack of confidence in the business they’re starting.  Here’s the reality. If you don’t feel that the people closet to you, or even acquaintances, should know about your new credit repair business, the you shouldn’t start it.

On the other hand, if you’re excited about letting everyone know you’re available to help people improve their credit situation you already have a leg up on the competition. Now we just need to figure out the best way to do it. Do you do an email blast? Should you text everyone? Should you call key people? Let’s explore some possibilities.

The key is your attitude and how you’re thinking about it. You are starting a new business. And you want to learn how to run a successful credit repair business. Think of it as any new business. What if you were starting a new tax business? How about if you just got your real estate license? Or you were opening a new boutique. What if you bought a Sports Clips franchise? What would you do then? How would you get the word out to everyone that you know about your new business?

If I Did It All Over Again

Here’s something I would do if I were doing it all over again. In fact, this is something you could do a couple of times a year. Host a gathering at your home or a local restaurant. Get some finger foods and serve beverages. Wine and beer if you’re so inclined. If you’re not opposed to alcohol, I think it’s a good idea for the simple reason that a drink or two loosens people up.

Have flyers and brochures available and invite people from all aspects of your life. Some family members that are supportive and don’t think you’ve lost it because you’re not working for someone else. Call anyone you know in real estate, the mortgage business or banking. Invite other entrepreneurs you know in any business. Make it a good opportunity for people to get to know other people. Prepare to speak to the crowd that gathers for 5 minutes max about your new business and let the party flow.

If you’re more of a business or formal mindset you could host a presentation of your new business. You could do a PowerPoint presentation of your services and educate people on the importance of good credit. And you can close with how they can help you grow your business which is referrals. If they need help with their credit, they’ll tell you. Trust me. You don’t need to ask.

Just Get the Word Out

If you don’t want to go through the effort to do something like hosting a gathering, then you still need to contact people that you know. In our business we have developed phone apps for that purpose. All your contacts are automatically transferred to the app. Then you can send a contact a message letting them know about your business. If they express any interest in learning more, you can send them a link to a 2-minute teaser video.

By the way I would NOT do an email blast. That’s very impersonal, very old school, and most importantly ineffective.

Another bit of advice that might seem like common sense is do not approach people that you know as credit repair candidates. Again, if they need help let them approach you after they know about your business. Approach them by asking them to help you get the word out about your business. The people that you know, know a ton of people. You can expand your sphere of influence very rapidly by engaging your contacts.

If you embrace the idea of contacting your warm market this can not only get your business off to a great start, but it can keep you busy for a long time. And, for the most part, it’s free (except the appetizers and drinks part).

Incorporate the Efforts of Others to Run Your Credit Repair Business

Another unique aspect to our business model is that you can bring on others that also want to start a new business. Why not join you in the credit repair business? You could be full time while they just want to earn a little side hustle money. Or visa versa. Either way you earn a percentage of what they produce. By getting the word out to people that you know you could expand your business immediately. You’ll have people referring people to you. And, you might have some people that join you in the business and have a huge incentive to duplicate your efforts. That means they’ll be telling a lot of people about it too!

He outlines 7 specific habits that we should develop to move us through stages from Dependence to Independence and finally to Interdependence.

Interdependence, the ultimate goal is “the paradigm under which we cooperate to achieve something that cannot be achieved independently.” Read this sentence again. It is a theme discussed in different ways by nearly every author of business building and personal development information from Napoleon Hill to John Maxwell. Robert Kiyosaki maintains that in order to reach financial independence we must develop systems and networks. By developing systems and networks we become ‘interdependent’ and thus can rely on others to help us produce far more than we can on our own.

To test this theory, try and think of just one highly successful individual that did it all on their own. My first inclination is to think of professional athletes. They surely were alone in achieving their success, weren’t they? In sports you perform as an individual even if part of a team. Yet in virtually every Hall of Fame speech the athlete runs out of time giving thanks and credit to dozens of people that impacted their career. And without whom they wouldn’t be standing at that podium on that day.

For several years I have been blogging and producing videos about how to, and what you need to start a credit repair business. If done correctly the credit repair business can be an incredibly lucrative and rewarding home-based business. However, it’s all about the business model. If someone chooses the wrong business model it can be a failure before it gets off the ground.

The reason I am qualified to share this information is that I started my own credit repair business in 2012. Today that business produces nearly $1 million in annual revenue and provides me a very comfortable 6 figure income. I have worked from home the entire time and control my schedule. My wife and I travel whenever we like. I can decide to work while traveling or have someone on the team work my business for me and shut down completely.

The revenue, income and time freedom I enjoy are all a result of the business model we chose. I cannot stress this enough. You can choose to go it alone and start a credit repair business all on your own. I contend that if you choose this type of business model you will never generate the revenue, income and time freedom you perhaps desire.

    • You will need to purchase software. The cost of credit repair software ranges from $30/month to $400/month.
    • Marketing materials are a must to be in the credit repair business. You could start off with just business cards and flyers. But in order to compete with other companies you will want to have tri-fold brochures and even marketing videos. This can get very costly
    • Providing your clients online access to their credit repair information and updates to the progress may be cost prohibitive when you’re starting out. But just know that other companies provide this and it’s something you’ll have to convince your prospects that they don’t need

ERA Credit Services

Before I get into sharing our training program (personal and FES training) let me talk about the name of my independent agency with Financial Education Services. When most people become Agents they simply use their own name. I decided to brand a company name for my agency, ERA Credit Services. So, if you were to go to YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn or even my website you would see the name of ERA Credit Services. FES or Financial Education services, is not mentioned often and is not mentioned on our website at all. There is a strategic reason behind it that I can explain more in detail if we ever get the chance to discuss this business.

Building the Financial Education Services Business

In general, you can build an FES business 2 ways. And, you can combine, as I have, both of these ways. You can build it organically, meaning without paid advertising. And you can build it through paid advertising. I have done and continue to do both. Therefore I can teach you how to do both but with a disclaimer.

If you have an advertising budget and are familiar with online tools such as sales funnels, social media and Google Ads this is a great way to go. However, your budget and your knowledge have to be extensive. I cannot, nor can anyone else that’s busy running their own business, teach you Facebook, Instagram, Google Ads and sales funnels from scratch. Again, you have to bring a certain level of experience in these areas to the table.

Anyone Can Learn the FES Business

However, you do not need to have any level of significant experience to learn this business and build it organically (without paid advertising). This is an area that I have flourished in and so has my team. There are very specific methods of procuring customers and agents that I can teach you. There is a system with tools that I have developed for my team that I also teach and that each agent on my team has access to.

The FES Success System of Training

FES has developed a top notch online training program. It will teach you the basics from getting your website and services set up to using their mini sales funnel called FES Connect. A huge benefit to this online training program is that it’s flexible for our agents. They can access the training anytime of the day or night so it really helps those agents that have a full time job and a family.

 Coaching Calls

I take a personal interest in the success of each agent on my team. Immediately after an agent joins FES we set up our 1st coaching call. From there my FES agents have a link they can use to schedule coaching calls very week if they like. They also have my cell phone and know that I respond to calls and texts very quickly.

Weekly Live Training

In addition, I conduct live training sessions every week through Facebook Live and our private team Facebook page. I cover different topics each week about sales, recruiting, credit repair, customer service and more. Facebook is a great platform for this as any previous Facebook Live can be viewed by new and veteran agents on their schedule.

What Else Do You Need to Be Successful With FES?

Financial Education Services and I will provide you with everything you need. However, each new FES Agent has to bring with them a sincere desire to succeed and a willingness to get outside their comfort zone. They also have to be coachable and okay with learning new business strategies and letting some old philosophies go. And finally, they have to have a strong work ethic that is commensurate with the kind of success they want to achieve.

What I love about the FES business is that people can earn a steady part time income of between $500 and $1,000 a month or they can earn a significant 6 figure income. They only difference is the time and effort that they put in.

Credit Repair Business – The Reality

It’s a Great Business But…

The changes in the American economy over the last 2 decades have created a huge market of consumers in need of help with their credit report and increasing their credit score. As a result, many people have decided to look into starting a credit repair business.

But just like any other business there are challenges. If you have never attempted starting a credit repair business before there is a lot of information to gather and knowledge necessary to do it the right way. The credit repair industry, like many others, has a high percentage of people that start the business and quit within the first year. Why is that? And how do you avoid being one of those people? This article will cover the points you need to consider.

Laws and Licensing

There are no licenses you need to have to be in the credit repair business. However, you do have a few laws you must consider. And, these laws may be different in each state. The Credit Restoration Organizations Act (CROA), a federal law, states that a for profit company cannot charge fees before performing credit repair work for a consumer. Although many have come up with creative ways to deal with this law it will affect cash flow for a new business owner. However, attorneys, banks, credit unions and 501(c)3 non-profit companies may charge upfront fees. They are exempt from CROA.

In addition, certain states require surety bonds up to $100,000. Bonds will run you between $1,000 and $10,000 every 2 years depending on the surety amount and your credit score. Yes, credit score affects just about everything.

Fees for Service

In addition to deciding how you are going to charge for your credit repair services (if you cannot charge upfront how are you going to charge?) you must also decide how much to charge. Gone are the days when you can charge $1,500 to $5,000 for credit repair services. There are established, reputable companies that charge $90 to $125/month for a very effective service. You’ll have to compete with that when starting a credit repair business.

Initial Investment of Starting a Credit Repair Business

There are typically two ways to go with starting a credit repair business. The first is to purchase all the necessary components such as software, a web site, legal documents, training, etc. separately. We’ve estimated this cost to be about $10,000 in the first year although these items can be purchased on a monthly basis. The other way to go is to purchase a franchise. The investment in a credit repair franchise is between $19,000 and $25,000. Don’t be discouraged if you do not have $10,000. We will give you a third alternative below that has a start up cost of less than $300.00.

Technology

Consumers today expect that a company will have technology in place to allow them to stay in touch and keep track of what’s happening with the progress of their credit repair process. You must provide your customers with the ability to check the status of their account online to be competitive in this industry. Doing this as solopreneur may be an expensive and daunting task.

Skill Sets

If you’re doing it alone in this business you have to be good at three things, marketing, sales and administration. You have to be a good marketer. Selling your credit repair service to friends and family may get you started but you must position yourself as a credit repair expert in your area. You have to get the word out in the community by developing relations with other business professionals that may have clients that need your service. You must have an online presence as well. Not just a website but the ability to drive traffic to your web site. You need to have leads coming to you every day.

Then you have to be great at sales especially when you’re new because you have no track record or credibility to fall back on. You have to sell against local and national companies that your prospective customer is going to contact as well. Even if your company has the same credentials and advantages as other companies how good are you at selling and closing sales?

Lastly, you have to be good at credit repair. Can you pull credit reports (credit report brokers don’t want to supply credit repair companies) and analyze those reports. Do you know how to advise the client as to the probability of removing all types of items (foreclosures, liens, charge offs, medical bills, repossessions, late payments and more). You then have to know the correct dispute codes and reasons that a credit bureau will open a dispute about these items. Then you have to track this information and be prepared to challenge each item multiple times for a client. This is no easy set of tasks.

Time

You have to have time to do all that is stated above when starting a credit repair business. Credit repair business owners can’t find time to develop new customers because they are doing the credit repair work for their existing customers. Or, they can’t find the time to service the customer because they are trying to develop new customers.

We also work from our home office. We enjoy freedom and flexibility with our work schedule which is so rewarding. It doesn’t mean we didn’t work hard building our business.
