Before I get into sharing our training program (personal and FES training) let me talk about the name of my independent agency with Financial Education Services. When most people become Agents they simply use their own name. I decided to brand a company name for my agency, ERA Credit Services. So, if you were to go to YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn or even my website you would see the name of ERA Credit Services. FES or Financial Education services, is not mentioned often and is not mentioned on our website at all. There is a strategic reason behind it that I can explain more in detail if we ever get the chance to discuss this business.

Building the Financial Education Services Business

In general, you can build an FES business 2 ways. And, you can combine, as I have, both of these ways. You can build it organically, meaning without paid advertising. And you can build it through paid advertising. I have done and continue to do both. Therefore I can teach you how to do both but with a disclaimer.

If you have an advertising budget and are familiar with online tools such as sales funnels, social media and Google Ads this is a great way to go. However, your budget and your knowledge have to be extensive. I cannot, nor can anyone else that’s busy running their own business, teach you Facebook, Instagram, Google Ads and sales funnels from scratch. Again, you have to bring a certain level of experience in these areas to the table.

Anyone Can Learn the FES Business

However, you do not need to have any level of significant experience to learn this business and build it organically (without paid advertising). This is an area that I have flourished in and so has my team. There are very specific methods of procuring customers and agents that I can teach you. The changes in the American economy over the last 2 decades have created a huge market of consumers in need of help with their credit report and increasing their credit score. As a result, many people have decided to look into starting a credit repair business.

But just like any other business, if you have never attempted starting a credit repair business before there is a lot of information to gather and knowledge necessary to do it the right way. The credit repair industry, like many others, has a high percentage of people that start the business and quit within the first year. Why is that? And how do you avoid being one of those people? This article will cover the points you need to consider.

Laws and Licensing

There are no licenses you need to have to be in the credit repair business. However, you do have a few laws you must consider. And, these laws may be different in each state. The Credit Restoration Organizations Act (CROA), a federal law, states that a for profit company cannot charge fees before performing credit repair work for a consumer. Although many have come up with creative ways to deal with this law it will affect cash flow for a new business owner. However, attorneys, banks, credit unions and 501(c)3 non-profit companies may charge upfront fees. They are exempt from CROA.

In addition, certain states require surety bonds up to $100,000. Bonds will run you between $1,000 and $10,000 every 2 years depending on the surety amount and your credit score. Yes, credit score affects just about everything.

Fees for Service

In addition to deciding how you are going to charge for your credit repair services (if you cannot charge upfront how are you going to charge?) you must also decide how much to charge. Gone are the days when you can charge $1,500 to $5,000 for credit repair services. There are established, reputable companies that charge $90 to $125/month for a very effective service. You’ll have to compete with that when starting a credit repair business.

Initial Investment of Starting a Credit Repair Business

There are typically two ways to go with starting a credit repair business. The first is to purchase all the necessary components such as software, a web site, legal documents, training, etc. separately. We’ve estimated this cost to be about $10,000 in the first year although these items can be purchased on a monthly basis. The other way to go is to purchase a franchise. The investment in a credit repair franchise is between $19,000 and $25,000. Don’t be discouraged if you do not have $10,000. We will give you a third alternative below that has a start up cost of less than $300.00.

Technology

Consumers today expect that a company will have technology in place to allow them to stay in touch and keep track of what’s happening with the progress of their credit repair process. You must provide your customers with the ability to check the status of their account online to be competitive in this industry. Doing this as solopreneur may be an expensive and daunting task.

Skill Sets

If you’re doing it alone in this business you have to be good at three things, marketing, sales and administration. You have to be a good marketer. Selling your credit repair service to friends and family may get you started but you must position yourself as a credit repair expert in your area. You have to get the word out in the community by developing relations with other business professionals that may have clients that need your service. You must have an online presence as well. Not just a website but the ability to drive traffic to your web site. You need to have leads coming to you every day.

Then you have to be great at sales especially when you’re new because you have no track record or credibility to fall back on. You have to sell against local and national companies that your prospective customer is going to contact as well. Even if your company has the same credentials and advantages as other companies how good are you at selling and closing sales?

Lastly, you have to be good at credit repair. Can you pull credit reports (credit report brokers don’t want to supply credit repair companies) and analyze those reports. Do you know how to advise the client as to the probability of removing all types of items (foreclosures, liens, charge offs, medical bills, repossessions, late payments and more). You then have to know the correct dispute codes and reasons that a credit bureau will open a dispute about these items. Then you have to track this information and be prepared to challenge each item multiple times for a client. This is no easy set of tasks.

Time

You have to have time to do all that is stated above when starting a credit repair business. Credit repair business owners can’t find time to develop new customers because they are doing the credit repair work for their existing customers. Or, they can’t find the time to service the customer because they are trying to develop new customers.

How to Find Credit Repair Customers

Learning how to find credit repair customers is the single most important skill set to have if you’re going to be in the credit repair business. I’ve spent 6 plus years in the industry and have talked to well over 2000 people that were thinking about getting into the credit repair business. It seems they’re most concerned with software to do the credit repair work and laws relating to the business. Those are challenges to overcome for sure. But none of that matters unless you know how to find credit repair customers now and well into the future.

I’m going to give you the exact same advice that I wish someone had given me back in 2012. It may not be what you want to hear. But it’s what’s going to allow someone to start finding credit repair customers right away.

A word about what else you will read on the internet about this topic. You may read that you need to have an affiliate marketing program, run paid ads, and that your website will bring in customers. But whatever you read identify the source. Like Credit Repair Cloud they are typically trying to sell you their software or program. Think before you act.

How to Find Credit Repair Customers

Before I give you my recommendations on how to find credit repair customers please note that these are not in any chronological order. The reason is that you may have a different skill set than the next person. You may have social media experience, or experience with building websites. If so, then dive into that earlier than most would. If not, you may want to devote more time to those things you can do. The most important thing is that you go get customers! Then as your business becomes profitable take the time to venture into other areas that may take more time, energy and money.

Word of Mouth

See, this isn’t what you wanted to hear is it? But if you want to know how to find credit repair customers this is the quickest and easiest, and most necessary thing that you do. The reason is that people aren’t going to just tell you they have a credit score problem during regular conversation. It’s only when they find out you can help them that they will share that with you.

I’ve said this a thousand times…”Everyone you know needs to know you’re in the credit repair business.”

Stay away from email blasting. Don’t just get a list of your friends and colleagues email addresses and blast. It doesn’t work. Many go to spam. And it’s annoying. One solid conversation will get you much further than a thousand emails.

Business Networking for Credit Repair

A great way to get the word out is to join some local business networking groups. It also gives you an opportunity to hone your conversation and presentation skills. How are you going to talk about your credit repair business? How are you going to present it to a group? Business networking will allow you to practice. Plus business owners know lots of people. They also know people in professions that are important to you like real estate and mortgage.

Don’t hand out business cards, get business cards. I’ve seen so many people at a networking event hand out their cards when they weren’t asked for a card. That’s a networking taboo. Don’t hand out a card unless you’re asked. And never give a card unless you get a card. When you have someone’s card you are now in control and can follow up with them. When they have your card guess who is in control? Not you!

Get a table at a local event. To be honest I’ve never had this produce a ton of business. But it got me talking to a lot of people and practicing my conversations about my credit repair business and answering questions. Plus, as I said before, one good conversation can produce a lot of business.

Referral Sources for Credit Repair

If you’ve not liked what I told you so far you cannot ignore this. If you want to know how to find credit repair customers pay close attention. There are literally thousands of people in real estate, mortgage, banking, auto and solar business that have people not qualify because of credit score every day. And, they don’t have a solution to the problem. How about if you become that solution?

Referrals are far better, a 100 times better than a lead off the internet. Why? It’s because you are being referred. It gives you instant credibility. And, if you teach your referral source just a little bit about how to refer you, your chance of getting that sale is really good. Think about it. They are referring to you someone that is emotionally invested in increasing their credit score. They typically will gladly pay you to help them.

Social Media

Below this I’m going to talk about online marketing but I’ve chosen to talk about social media first. The reason is that it doesn’t matter if you are tech savvy or not. You must have a social media presence. If Facebook is beyond you then get someone that can help you build a Facebook presence. It’s essential.

I teach my Agents from around the country that work with me about Attraction and Curiosity marketing on Facebook. That’s a very in depth topic that I won’t go into here. But what I will tell you is that you want to use social media to educate and attract people. And, make them curious. You don’t want to annoy them with every post being a sales pitch. Always remember you need to first attract people to you before you find credit repair customers.

More Online Marketing

Credit Repair Website- Is a website a priority right away? I would love to tell you that it’s not. But it really is.  The reason that it is a priority is not because it will rank on the front page of Google right away. You need it to rank on Google before you can use a website to find credit repair customers. It will take months before you’ll see that. And, that’s only if you or someone that’s working on your website is really good at search engine optimization (SEO). The reason you want to have a website sooner than later is so that it seasons. Google will not rank a brand new website. Get your website built even if it’s not perfect. And get Google, Bing and Yahoo crawling your site right away.

Credit Repair Blog- When you start your website get a platform like WordPress that allows you to have a blog inside your site. Blogging about credit and credit repair topics will get eyeballs on what you write with links back to your website. Think about it. You’re reading my blog right now! I get it. Some people don’t like to write. Do your best and then hand it over to someone that can write like your teenager. They would probably be fired up to do that for you. Then post your blog articles on your social media pages.

Listings for Your Website- the more links you have back to your website the better. That’s why you want to post your blogs out there. But you can also have links back to your site from Yelp, Google, Bing, Angies List, YP, and many, many more. The more listings you create, the more links back to your website which will get the search engine bots to pay attention when they crawl your site. That will move you up in the rankings.

Credit Repair Sales Funnels- This is a controversial topic for me. The idea is to run ads on Google, Facebook, etc. and drive people to a landing page to see what you’re selling. Then get them to submit their contact info to you so you can use an email or other type drip campaign to keep their eye balls on you. I get it. I just haven’t been able to make it work myself. I’ve spent a lot of time and money trying. As this is being written I am having someone set up a funnel for me because I’ve realized it’s not in my wheel house. I’m not trying to discourage you. I’m just being honest. Perhaps you are good at graphics, writing advertising copy, and have some technical skills. I have the technical side but not the other two.

Credit Repair Affiliate Marketing- I love this idea and am close to pulling the trigger on an affiliate program. However, I would not recommend it when you first get started. The concept is that you have people (affiliates) that have high traffic sites that advertise your credit repair service. If someone from their site goes to your site and buys from you, you get a sale and they get a commission.

Ask yourself these questions before you launch into an affiliate marketing program. Can you afford to pay a commission to an affiliate when you’re first getting your business of the ground? And, is that commission going to be attractive enough for them to market your service over somebody else? They have no loyalty to you. They have loyalty to whoever can convert their leads into the most sales and pay them the most money. And, as I told you before, internet leads are not the best. You might find yourself wasting a lot of time and money here. I’m willing to try it because I’ve done several million in sales in 6 plus years and am really good at closing business.

So there you have it. More than 6 years of figuring out how to get credit repair customers. Each of the categories above has more to it. But this I believe will be helpful to you.

If you’re looking to start a credit repair business you may have come to the conclusion that you basically have two options.

Option 1- Piece together the business by paying separately for software, a website, contracts, training and other essential components by buying kits, CD’s and manuals.

Option 2- Purchase a credit repair franchise that presumably has everything you need to get started.

What You’ll Need to Start a Credit Repair Business from Scratch

Before you can decide on a company to work with that offers pieces of the credit repair business you need to understand all the pieces you’ll need. Here is a partial list of what you would need to start a credit repair business.

There is the credit repair franchise or licensee option. We found a few although there may be more.

According to Franchise Gator,  CreditCRM has a start up of $15,000.

Credit Dispute Pro

Franchise Clique lists Credit Dispute Pro at a start up of $9,500.

Credit Repair USA

There is also a company called Credit Repair USA which is not a franchise. They consider you a licensee. According to a video on their website as of the update of this post they’ve been bringing on licensees since 2015 and have about 200 such licensees. Franchise Gator lists their fees at between $199/mo to $1499/mo.

Challenges with a Credit Repair Franchise

Let’s assume each of these franchisors or licensors provides you with everything listed above. And let’s ignore for the fact for a moment that many credit repair franchisors have gone out of business. That, of course, leaves their franchisees with no benefit to the money they spent on the franchise. You still have to consider that franchisors typically limit your territory.

And what really are you paying thousands of dollars for? None of these companies have a household name. If you buy a Subway sandwich franchise you’re getting a recognized name and national TV exposure. But none of these companies will accomplish that for you.  And, are they going to satisfy the requirements in your state or do you have to do that?
