What Does It Take?

When thinking about possible businesses to start, whether it be a part-time side hustle or a full-time venture, a lot of people think about a credit repair career. And, for good reason. Especially if they get gratification from helping others. A good credit score has become more important than ever before. And, there are millions who have a poor score and don’t understand how to get a good credit score.
I’ve written many blog posts and done over a dozen videos that you can find on my YouTube channel that explain the steps necessary to start a credit repair business. So, I’m not going to cover those details in this post. Instead, I’m going to focus on what it takes after someone has begun their credit repair career.

Know the Probability

I know this sounds very basic, but I talk to people in credit repair all the time that really do not know how federal law works. They simply do not understand credit repair law. It’s one of the first things I teach someone when they join our company. I’m not just talking about the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Someone in credit repair needs to understand the probability that an item can get removed from a credit report based on several different factors. How old is the item? What type of item is it? Who is the creditor? Is it an open or closed account? Is it a charge-off? Has the item been paid or is it still outstanding? All these factors will either increase or decrease the probability that you or any company can get that item removed for the client.

Understand the Credit Repair Market

Another area I see lacking by many that want a credit repair career is that they don’t understand the credit repair market. They believe that everyone that has a sub-600 credit score desires to take the steps and spend the money to get a higher credit score. That is not true at all. The only time most people with a poor credit score are motivated to improve their situation is when they want to use their credit. When they want to buy something like a home, a car, or another major purchase that requires financing. I say this all the time. “People can live their whole lives with a bad credit score.”

The reason that this is important to understand if you want to have a credit repair career, is because of marketing. You could spend a bunch of money and countless hours chasing the wrong people. You need to find people that are emotionally invested in a major purchase. And, have enough money so that your fee for service seems like nothing compared to not being able to make that purchase. Chasing people that have a low score but aren’t ready to buy something that requires them to have a good score is a serious waste of time and money.

Know Your Competition

It amazes me that people want to be successful in selling their credit repair service, but they have no idea who the competition is in their local area and the national companies. Once you learn who your competitors are then find out what they do and what they charge. Do they pull credit, or do they ask the client to furnish it? Is there policy to dispute all items right away or do they string it out to be able to charge more monthly fee to their clients? Do they provide their clients with any online reporting? You need to know what you’re up against in order to do what comes next.

What Makes You Different?

There are thousands of companies, large and small, in this country that do credit repair. How are you going to be any different? Why should someone trust you? What is going to make them start their credit repair service with you? If you can’t answer these questions with some serious differentiators and with confidence, stop now and find those answers.

How Are You Going to Get Your Clients?

This is also huge to figure out before you invest a lot of time and energy into your credit repair career. There are 2 main ways to attract clients. You can advertise. If you decide to go this way it doesn’t matter how you choose to do it, there’s always going to be a challenge. When someone calls, emails, texts, or comments in response to an ad, you’ll have no trust factor or no credibility. You’ll have about 10 seconds to develop that. Which means you better be good on the phone and have some sales skills. It goes back to what I said about people with a low credit score not necessarily being motivated. They may see your Facebook post at 11 at night and be a little curious. But are they serious? You’ll need to sort through a ton of advertising leads to find sales. Trust me.

The best way in this industry to find qualified leads and have trust and credibility before they even contact you is when you get referrals. Specifically, referrals from real estate agents and brokers, mortgage brokers and loan officers, and other credit-related industry professionals. This is the bread and butter of the industry. You can offer these professionals the opportunity to help them close more business and make a significant amount more money every year. All they need to do is edify you and give you their credit-challenged prospects info. It’s a beautiful thing.

Be Consistent in Your Credit Repair Career

In order to have a successful credit repair career, it’s also important to be consistent. Many people start a credit repair business on a part-time basis. It is easy in that case, to become distracted and not put in consistent hours and consistent effort into building your business. Especially in the beginning, whether or not it’s going as well as you expected, you have to push through the emotions and the fatigue and do the work every day. Given that you have studied and know credit repair law, know the chances of removing items, know the credit repair market, know your competition, can share your differentiators, and have a good marketing plan, you still need to work your tail off. It won’t come easy. And, it will take some time. But a successful credit repair career will only come to those that consistently work on their credit repair business every day.

How to Run a Credit Repair Business
from Anywhere

As I’m writing this, I’m in Columbus, NC. Columbus is about 650 miles north of my home in Largo, FL at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. My wife, Shirley, and I have been here for a little over a week and we’re having a great time. This is such a beautiful area to explore. We’re here for 5 weeks and we plan to explore as much as we can. That is what has prompted me today to write about how to run a credit repair business from anywhere.

Our credit repair business has given us a very nice income, allowed us to save for retirement, build a steady residual income for the day when we stop working and gives us time and travel freedom. The credit repair business is a great business!

The Right Business Model Creates Freedom

But as I’ve been writing about and doing YouTube videos for years, you must have the right business model. You can run a credit repair business in a few different ways. But if you want true residual income and the ability to travel and still work your business, there is only one way to do it that will work.

It’s all about having a staff that does the administrative part of the business. I call it service delivery. If you’re marketing for credit repair customers, selling to those customers, delivering the service, and providing customer support you will be tied to your business. You’ll never be able to take time off and travel.

Think about it. What sense would it make to do what we did? You drive 11 hours to get to a beautiful spot and now must take calls for new business, pull credit, analyze credit reports, draft dispute letters, and take calls from existing customers that have questions. That does not sound like a fun travel experience.

Travel and Still Run Your Credit Repair Business

Here’s how I’ve got things set up for the 5 weeks that we’re in North Carolina. I still take calls from customer prospects. But I only take those calls during the hours I’ve scheduled myself to work which is Monday to Thursday, 10 am to 5 pm. If they call at another time, I’ll text them back and ask then to go to my website and book an appointment. I have software on my website that pulls up my Google calendar and shows the times that I’m available. They pick a time and I get the information to call them at a time that I’m working.

If I sell our services to that customer, I input the information and our staff does the rest. I’m done. I don’t need to worry about pulling credit, drafting letters, or answering the customer’s questions. If there are any serious issues with a client, our staff calls and discusses it with me. And, there are rarely serious issues with a client.

It’s a Great Business But…

The changes in the American economy over the last 2 decades have created a huge market of consumers in need of help with their credit reports and increasing their credit score. As a result, many people have decided to look into starting a credit repair business.

But just like any other business, there are challenges. If you have never attempted starting a credit repair business before there is a lot of information to gather and knowledge necessary to do it the right way. The credit repair industry, like many others, has a high percentage of people that start the business and quit within the first year. Why is that? And how do you avoid being one of those people? This article will cover the points you need to consider.

Laws and Licensing

There are no licenses you need to have to be in the credit repair business. However, you do have a few laws you must consider. And, these laws may be different in each state. The Credit Restoration Organizations Act (CROA), a federal law, states that a for-profit company cannot charge fees before performing credit repair work for a consumer. Although many have come up with creative ways to deal with this law it will affect cash flow for a new business owner. However, attorneys, banks, credit unions, and 501(c)3 non-profit companies may charge upfront fees. They are exempt from CROA.

In addition, certain states require surety bonds up to $100,000. Bonds will run you between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars every 2 years depending on the surety amount and your credit score. Yes, credit score affects just about everything.

Fees for Service

In addition to deciding how you are going to charge for your credit repair services (if you cannot charge upfront how are you going to charge?). You must also decide how much to charge. Gone are the days when you can charge $1,500 to $5,000 for credit repair services. There are established, reputable companies that charge $90 to $125/month for a very effective service. You’ll have to compete with that when starting a credit repair business.

Initial Investment of Starting a Credit Repair Business

There are typically two ways to go with starting a credit repair business. The first is to purchase all the necessary components such as software, a web site, legal documents, training, etc. separately. We’ve estimated this cost to be about $10,000 in the first year although these items can be purchased on a monthly basis. The other way to go is to purchase a franchise. The investment in a credit repair franchise is between $19,000 and $25,000. Don’t be discouraged if you do not have $10,000. We will give you a third alternative below that has a start-up cost of less than $300.00.

Technology

Consumers today expect that a company will have technology in place to allow them to stay in touch and keep track of what’s happening with the progress of their credit repair process. You must provide your customers with the ability to check the status of their accounts online to be competitive in this industry. Doing this as a solopreneur may be an expensive and daunting task.

Skill Sets

If you’re doing it alone in this business you have to be good at three things, marketing, sales, and administration. You have to be a good marketer. Selling your credit repair service to friends and family may get you started but you must position yourself as a credit repair expert in your area. You have to get the word out in the community by developing relations with other business professionals that may have clients that need your service. You must have an online presence as well. Not just a website but the ability to drive traffic to your web site. You need to have leads coming to you every day.

Then you have to be great at sales especially when you’re new because you have no track record or credibility to fall back on. You have to sell against local and national companies that your prospective customer is going to contact as well. Even if your company has the same credentials and advantages as other companies how good are you at selling and closing sales?

Lastly, you have to be good at credit repair. Can you pull credit reports (credit report brokers don’t want to supply credit repair companies) and analyze those reports. Do you know how to advise the client as to the probability of removing all types of items (foreclosures, liens, charge offs, medical bills, repossessions, late payments, and more)? You then have to know the correct dispute codes and reasons that a credit bureau will open a dispute about these items. Then you have to track this information and be prepared to challenge each item multiple times for a client. This is no easy set of tasks.

Time

You have to have time to do all that is stated above when starting a credit repair business. Credit repair business owners can’t find time to develop new customers because they are doing credit repair work for their existing customers. Or, they can’t find the time to service the customer because they are trying to develop new customers.

What You’ll Need to Start a Credit Repair Business from Scratch

Before you can decide on a company to work with that offers pieces of the credit repair business you need to understand all the pieces you’ll need. Here is a partial list of what you would need to start a credit repair business.

A Web Site– and text for that web site such as frequently asked questions, a marketing video explaining your service, a contact form, an option for a client to sign up for your credit repair service online, and more. Also, in order for that website to bring you traffic or prospective clients, you’ll need to learn and understand Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Marketing Materials– brochures, flyers, business cards, and a logo just for starters. To compete with other companies you’ll also need videos on the services you offer, Some credit repair companies also now provide a phone app for their clients.

Credit Repair Laws and Surety Bonds- each state in the U.S. has specific laws regarding the operation of a credit repair business in addition to the federal Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA). Many states also require the purchase of a credit repair surety bond. These bonds range up to $100,000.

One of Your Biggest Expenses is Credit Repair Software

Credit Repair Software to assist in the credit repair process. Otherwise, you’ll need to draft dispute letters manually. You’ll also need to develop a sales tracking system, and accounting procedures to monitor payments from customers.

Credit Reports- credit repair software companies like Credit Repair Cloud do not provide you with a direct means of pulling credit for your client. They recommend that you have your client open an account with a company like Identity IQ or Smart Credit. This is an additional monthly fee for your client. Then you’ll need to ask them to provide you with their log in details so you can get their credit report. This is not the most professional and convenient way to get a credit report.

Merchant Services- in order for you to take credit and debit cards for payment, you’ll need a merchant account with a merchant services company. With Credit Repair Cloud, you’ll need to set this up yourself and incur an additional cost to do so. Please note that it is difficult to get a merchant services account, as a credit repair provider. You’ll potentially need to provide financial documentation including bank statements.

A Staffed Phone Line for customer support. This is often overlooked. Some customers will be highly concerned and pay close attention to what is happening with their credit restoration account. You need to think about the time you’ll have during business hours to answer these calls. And, if you aren’t always available during business hours, how will you manage the receipt and return of these calls.

An Automated Process for updating clients on their credit repair progress. People are very used to being able to access information online or through their phones.

Get Trained by People That Work the Business Everyday

Training on Credit Repair Law such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Credit Repair Organizations Act, sales training, and business training that can be done online or in person. Also, will you be able to explain to a prospective client the probability of getting the specific derogatory items they have on their credit report removed? You must manage a client’s expectations. Otherwise, they may expect all items to be removed and a 750 credit score within 30 days. As this won’t happen in most cases, you should explain this upfront.

Differentiators- If you start your own credit repair business by purchasing software through a company like Credit Repair Cloud or DisputeBee, you’ll be providing credit repair to your clients, yes. But what will distinguish you from all the other companies out there that provide credit repair services and have far more experience than you do? What will make you different?

We found no companies other than the third option (which we’ll reveal below) that provides all these pieces. To put it all together, costs will range upward from $1,000 to start a credit repair business. But that does not include many of the missing parts of your business. You can estimate the true start-up costs yourself but our figure is conservatively at $10,000 over the first year.

Credit Repair Franchise

There is the credit repair franchise or licensee option. We found a few although there may be more.

CreditCRM

According to Franchise Gator,  CreditCRM has a start-up of $15,000.

Credit Dispute Pro

Franchise Clique lists Credit Dispute Pro at a start-up of $9,500.

Credit Repair USA

There is also a company called Credit Repair USA which is not a franchise. They consider you a licensee. According to a video on their website as of the update of this post, they’ve been bringing on licensees since 2015 and have about 200 such licensees. Franchise Gator lists their fees at between $199/mo to $1499/mo.

Challenges with a Credit Repair Franchise

Let’s assume each of these franchisors or licensors provides you with everything listed above. And let’s ignore for the fact for a moment that many credit repair franchisors have gone out of business. That, of course, leaves their franchisees with no benefit to the money they spent on the franchise. You still have to consider that franchisors typically limit your territory.

And what really are you paying thousands of dollars for? None of these companies have a household name. If you buy a Subway sandwich franchise you’re getting a recognized name and national TV exposure. But none of these companies will accomplish that for you.  And, are they going to satisfy the requirements in your state, or do you have to do that?
