I’m going to introduce you to a business model that combines a home-based credit repair business opportunity with an MLM pay structure. It’s a brilliant business model for those that want a part-time or even full-time home-based business. When the company started in 2004 they had more of a traditional business model. They had independent salespeople that earned straight commissions and could not build a team. About 10 years ago they switched to a credit repair MLM model. Since then they have exploded in growth.

If your reading this then one could assume that you look favorably on MLM or network marketing opportunities. For those that do not, it may be because they perceive there to be a high failure rate among those that try MLM businesses. Let’s explore that for a bit.

MLM or Network Marketing vs. Traditional Small Business

According to Forbes.com, 20% of traditional small business start-ups fail in the first year. And, 50% fail in 5 years. Compare that with research on people that start an MLM business. 50% fail in their 1st year and 90% fail over 5 years. So, the failure rate is higher in a typical MLM opportunity than a traditional small business.

Most would look at the statistics just mentioned and stay away from MLM because 90% fail in 5 years. Others would look at the stats and jump in because they see that 10% succeed! What people don’t realize is that the 90/10 rule applies to most opportunities that aren’t a W-2 job where you get a salary. In opportunities where people must generate their income, 90% will fail. But that does not scare away those of use that believe enough in ourselves to become one of the 10%.

The primary reason why the failure rate is higher in MLM is that the upfront investment is so low. There’s less ‘skin in the game’. This makes it much easier to walk away instead of fighting to make it work. Because of the low start-up cost people don’t research the business before they start. People don’t treat it like a business. For some reason, people that start a network marketing business treat it with less care than if they had made a bigger investment or commitment.

A credit repair MLM is a brilliant business model because it reduces the high cost of starting a credit repair business. Therefore it also reduces the risk. In addition, there is a huge market of consumers in need of credit repair. Beyond that, there is a growing number of people looking for a second income.

Consider These Facts about the Market for a Credit Repair MLM

Approximately 35% of the U.S. adult population have a credit score below 620. This is considered sub-prime and will not get most qualified for a mortgage. That means that about 86 million people in this country at some point are going to need help with their credit.

44 million people in the U.S. have a second income or side hustle. It’s becoming more apparent that many Americans are having a difficult time meeting monthly expenses on one income alone.

Given these numbers, there is a big opportunity to provide helpful services and to build a large team of people offering the services.

Why a Credit Repair MLM is Inherently Different Than a Typical MLM

Because credit repair is a financial service people perceive a person offering credit repair to be more like a traditional business person. The customer doesn’t need to be explained how an MLM works because they are not participating in the business at all. They are simply a customer of the service. It’s not that anyone is hiding anything it’s just that the business model is irrelevant to the customer. And, the business model has no bearing on the quality and performance of the service. In fact, because the main company provides the service and not the person in the field, the quality of the service is higher and more consistent.

Network with Other Professionals

Finding customers is a relatively simple process. You can and should let people know that you’re in the credit repair business. They may need your service or know someone that does. Or, they may be looking for a second income. But the best place to find customers is to talk with those that see people with low credit scores daily. People that work in real estate, mortgage, automobile, solar, and banking are great people to talk with. They benefit greatly by referring their credit-challenged prospects to you. And again, there’s no need to explain the business model. You’re not trying to get people into the business. You’re just trying to help their credit-challenged prospective clients.

A Huge Market Looking for Extra Income

And, yes there are millions in this country looking for that second income stream. Most desire to earn between $500 and $1,000 a month. They are not necessarily wanting to earn six figures. That means that if they simply find a few customers every month they will achieve their income goal and stay with the business long term. They may even decide to invest more time and effort into it. For those that want to earn significantly more, simply go find a lot of customers and people that want to earn $500 a month.

People don’t have to recruit. If they just want to earn that $500 to $1,000 a month they can do that from selling the services alone. They do not have to recruit anyone into their business. But note that if someone wants to earn a significant income or turn it into a full-time career, building a team is essential.

You’ve heard the saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know”? I resign myself to this many times when I’m talking to people that call me for information on how to build a credit repair business.

The first stage of someone learning about starting a credit repair business almost always begins with changing a preconceived mindset that they have to build it all themselves. Because what they don’t yet realize initially is the enormous amount of time, energy, and money it will take to build it from scratch.

It’s a Great Business But…

The changes in the American economy over the last 2 decades have created a huge market of consumers in need of help with their credit reports and increasing their credit score. As a result, many people have decided to look into starting a credit repair business.

But just like any other business, there are challenges. If you have never attempted starting a credit repair business before there is a lot of information to gather and knowledge necessary to do it the right way. The credit repair industry, like many others, has a high percentage of people that start the business and quit within the first year. Why is that? And how do you avoid being one of those people? This article will cover the points you need to consider.

Laws and Licensing

There are no licenses you need to have to be in the credit repair business. However, you do have a few laws you must consider. And, these laws may be different in each state. The Credit Restoration Organizations Act (CROA), a federal law, states that a for-profit company cannot charge fees before performing credit repair work for a consumer. Although many have come up with creative ways to deal with this law it will affect cash flow for a new business owner. However, attorneys, banks, credit unions, and 501(c)3 non-profit companies may charge upfront fees. They are exempt from CROA.

In addition, certain states require surety bonds up to $100,000. Bonds will run you between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars every 2 years depending on the surety amount and your credit score. Yes, credit score affects just about everything.

Fees for Service

In addition to deciding how you are going to charge for your credit repair services (if you cannot charge upfront how are you going to charge?). You must also decide how much to charge. Gone are the days when you can charge $1,500 to $5,000 for credit repair services. There are established, reputable companies that charge $90 to $125/month for a very effective service. You’ll have to compete with that when starting a credit repair business.

Initial Investment of Starting a Credit Repair Business

There are typically two ways to go with starting a credit repair business. The first is to purchase all the necessary components such as software, a web site, legal documents, training, etc. separately. We’ve estimated this cost to be about $10,000 in the first year although these items can be purchased on a monthly basis. The other way to go is to purchase a franchise. The investment in a credit repair franchise is between $19,000 and $25,000. Don’t be discouraged if you do not have $10,000. We will give you a third alternative below that has a start-up cost of less than $300.00.

Technology

Consumers today expect that a company will have technology in place to allow them to stay in touch and keep track of what’s happening with the progress of their credit repair process. You must provide your customers with the ability to check the status of their accounts online to be competitive in this industry. Doing this as a solopreneur may be an expensive and daunting task.

Skill Sets

If you’re doing it alone in this business you have to be good at three things, marketing, sales, and administration. You have to be a good marketer. Selling your credit repair service to friends and family may get you started but you must position yourself as a credit repair expert in your area. You have to get the word out in the community by developing relations with other business professionals that may have clients that need your service. You must have an online presence as well. Not just a website but the ability to drive traffic to your web site. You need to have leads coming to you every day.

Then you have to be great at sales especially when you’re new because you have no track record or credibility to fall back on. You have to sell against local and national companies that your prospective customer is going to contact as well. Even if your company has the same credentials and advantages as other companies how good are you at selling and closing sales?

Lastly, you have to be good at credit repair. Can you pull credit reports (credit report brokers don’t want to supply credit repair companies) and analyze those reports. Do you know how to advise the client as to the probability of removing all types of items (foreclosures, liens, charge offs, medical bills, repossessions, late payments, and more)? You then have to know the correct dispute codes and reasons that a credit bureau will open a dispute about these items. Then you have to track this information and be prepared to challenge each item multiple times for a client. This is no easy set of tasks.

Time

You have to have time to do all that is stated above when starting a credit repair business. Credit repair business owners can’t find time to develop new customers because they are doing credit repair work for their existing customers. Or, they can’t find the time to service the customer because they are trying to develop new customers.

We’ve discussed before in a previous blog post, Start a Credit Repair Business for Under $300, that typically there are two options when starting a credit repair service. The first is to purchase a credit repair franchise. The other is to piece it all together and buy all the necessary components to begin your business in the credit repair industry.

Of course, that previous blog post goes on to share how you can become an Independent Agent with our company and have the best of both worlds. You can own your own credit repair business but not have to start from scratch. Everything is provided for you for under $300.

Important Questions to Ask Yourself

There is another important decision to make, however. Actually it’s a question you have to ask yourself. The answer to this question will dictate what direction is best for you to follow. The question is, “why are you getting into this business?” This is a simple question with a complex and very valuable answer. Typically people get into credit repair for one of two main reasons, or both. They want to help people, and/or they want to make money.

If you want to do either or both you must then ask yourself how many people do you want to help? And, how much money do you want to make? If the answer to either of those questions is a lot, or a significant amount then here is the stark reality of this business. You can’t help a lot of people nor make a lot of money on your own and by yourself.

Time and Money

In order to help a lot of people in the credit repair business you have to have the time and skills to market and sell your service, and do the administrative work on the back end once you get the clients. The time to do both is almost always underestimated by people that have no experience in this industry.

On top of that, you have to charge a reasonable fee. The days of charging $1,000 or more for credit restoration are over. There are too many companies out there doing it for far less. But if you compete for business charging a similar small fee you won’t have enough revenue coming in to make it work.

What’s the Answer – A Third Option

There is an answer when starting a credit repair service. Have a network of people running their own credit repair business and get paid a percentage on what they do. They can find customers that you can’t. They can develop relationships in their business community that you can’t.

You don’t have to pull and analyze credit reports and draft dispute letters. By the way, trying to find a company that will supply you with credit reports is next to impossible in the credit repair industry.

While running your own local business you can also build a large operation on a regional and even national scale. This is a concept that any successful company utilizes. Your income then is not just dependent on your own efforts. It’s now derived from the efforts of many others.

By being an agent, we can offer services that restore and protect people’s credit, their identity, their family, and their financial future. In these tough economic times, nearly everyone is in need of these services. They offer a low cost, effective credit repair program. In addition identity monitoring, a will and trust program, and other services that help people pay off debt faster and improve their credit score.

The Business Model

This is a direct sales opportunity. In the field, we are Independent Agents. It’s very similar to the relationship between a State farm Insurance agent and State Farm. We market and sell the services while the parent company and its partners deliver the services to our clients. They also provide the entire technology infrastructure and customer support. The one aspect of what we do as an Independent Agent that I really enjoy is developing relationships with other professionals. People in the mortgage business, real estate agents, bankruptcy attorneys, bankers, and auto dealers. People in these professions all have clients that need to restore their credit. Real estate and mortgage professionals, as well as auto dealers, particularly want to work with us. They have prospective clients that once derogatory items are removed from their credit report become ready, willing, and now able buyers.

We also work in our home office. We enjoy freedom and flexibility with our work schedule which is so rewarding. It doesn’t mean we didn’t work hard to build our business. It simply allows us to work when we want and how much we want. Just being in control versus being controlled provides a major sense of satisfaction.

It can be difficult and expensive to start a credit repair business in California. But it’s not due to the state requirements. Those mandates are fairly straight forward compared to other states. To start a California credit repair business you have to obtain a Certificate of Registration from the Department of Justice.

But before you get that certificate you must also get a surety bond in the amount of $100,000. The cost of the bond can be anywhere from $1,000 to over $10,000 depending on financial history and credit score. The bond is good for 2 years so this will be a recurring cost.
